Anwilka Vineyard started as a joint venture between Bordeaux’s Bruno Prats, former owner of Ch. Cos d'Estournel, Hubert de Bouard de Laforest, co-proprietor of Ch. Angwlus in Bordeaux, and Lowell Jooste of South Africa’s Klein Constantia Estate. Located just 7 kilometres from the ocean in Stellenbosch’s prime Helderberg region, Anwilka Vineyards was purchased in the late 1990s and extensive replanting of 40ha of vineyards comprising primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and some Merlot followed. Stellenbosch is recognized as the Cape’s premium red wine producing district. The significant maritime influence in the Helderberg region of Stellenbosch enables exceptional fruit quality.
In May 2012 Anwilka Vineyards merged with Klein Constantia, purchased in 2011 by Zdenek Bakala and Charles Harman. De Bouard and Prats remain in the newly-merged company as minority shareholders and Jooste becomes a non-executive board member. The philosophy of the owners is simply to spare no cost when it comes to wine quality. Resources are not squandered on lavish gateways and buildings, and the winery feels more like a modern farm outbuilding. The wine is exceptional, with the influence of its Bordeaux mentors clear for all to see.

Warwick is one of South Africa’s foremost wine estates and owes its name to Colonel William Alexander Gordon, Commanding Officer of the Warwickshire Regiment during the Boer War. After the war he decided not to return to the UK but instead bought this farm, naming it in honour of his regiment. In 1964 the estate was bought by Stanley and Norma Ratcliffe, who had searched long and hard to find a farm suitable for the production of high-quality wine, and the estate remains in the same family ownership today.
Norma, who had no previous experience of wine-making, began to study the subject in depth and proved so talented at it that she rapidly acquired a reputation as one of the country’s most skilled practitioners. She remains very much at the heart of the business, and holds a special place in the affections of South African wine enthusiasts and professionals. Managing Director Mike Ratcliffe is renowned in South African wine circles, not just because he produces quality wines here, but because of his wider role in promoting the country’s wines, and he sits on a number of industry bodies, too.
